NJ County Area Codes
There are many area codes in New Jersey and almost every county shares area codes as they overlap county borders. The most used number is area code 201.
New Jersey is currently using nine area codes with 3 area code overlay plans, often called overlay complexes.
Area code 201 was established in 1947 and covered all of New Jersey. But, due to a large growth in population NJ needed another area code. So, in 1957 area code 201 was split and 609 was established. This lasted until 1990 when 908 was established to help an overburdened numbering system.
